The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - Review

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Gosh, where to start! Although it got only 50% on the TomatometerThe Secret Life of Walter Mitty was a really good movie, in my opinion. It blends high adventure with daydreams in such a way that sometimes you don't know what's real and what's not.

The Story (Spoilers, duh.)

Walter Mitty arrives to the Life and Time building one Monday morning to hear that Life is migrating into a website-only company, and that the month's issue will be the last. Upon entering his office, he finds a gift from an old contact of his: A roll of negatives, a leather wallet bearing the Life slogan, and a handwritten message saying that negative #25 is probably his best photo yet. Upon closer examination of the roll, Walter finds that negative #25 is missing. He also discovers that his contact had sent a telegram (you read that correctly, a telegram) to his boss saying that negative 25 should be on the cover of the last issue of Life. Under pressure from his boss, Walter searches for clues to his contact's wherabouts, determining he must be somewhere in Greenland. Walter sets off to find him, planning to ask him for the negative he'd obviously accidentally left out. After jumping from a drunk pilot's helicopter into shark-infested waters, biking almost fifteen kilometers to an exploding volcano, and let's not forget skateboarding downhill for at least 5 km, he receives an urgent text message from a co-worker, telling him that he'll be fired if Walter doesn't show up to work as soon as possible. Walter gets on the first plane back, and goes to work the next morning. Outraged that Walter doesn't have the negative, he fires him. Returning to his mother's home, he throws out the wallet he got earlier, it only reminds him of failed expeditions and the loss of his job. He sits down on the couch facing the piano, and begins examining an abstract-looking photo his contact had sent in the roll which was supposed to contain #25. Soon, he realizes that the photo lines up exactly with the edge of the piano sitting right in front of him! He questions his mother, and she tells him that the man came to her house, and asked about Walter's work schedule and took a couple photos. His mom also tells him that he was going to Afghanistan for his next photo shoot. Walter promptly hops on a plane to Afghanistan to find him, and after a lengthy hike, being slapped repeatedly with a branch, and being abandoned by his hiking crew (squad, bunch, whatever) he finds the man who neglected to send him the photo. Upon questioning him on the whereabouts of the picture, the man informs him that he'd placed negative 25 into the wallet. The same wallet Walter had thrown out in anguish. Back home it is, without the negative. Where, after selling his mom's piano, she gives him the wallet he'd thrown into her trash a few days ago. "I always keep all your knick-knacks." Walter returns triumphantly to the Life and Time building to meet his disgruntled boss. He hands him the negative, without ever looking at it. Later, the last issue of Life comes out, with the negative that Walter had spent the last two weeks travelling the world to find.

I'd rate this movie four of five stars.

Top 10 Movies of 2013

2013 was a great year for movies! We saw many sequels and original movies! It was tough to pick a favourite but I have! Here are my 10 favourite movies of 2013...

10. The Butler

This was actually a surprise... I wasn't expecting to enjoy this movie as much as I did! It's a great story of the struggle African Americans in America had, and how many of them were slaves. It was heart breaking and joyful! It was also great acting!! I was always engaged!

9. Monsters University

I personally enjoyed Monsters University but was disappointed that it didn't receive any Golden Globe Nominations but that isn't what defines a movie! Over all this was a fun time and a very well done prequel to the beloved Monsters Inc.

8. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Another sequel in 2013 Catching Fire was epic! Action packed, suspenseful, exciting!! They did a great job in adapting this movie! I love the way they dip lay all of the districts and the poverty going on in the world! It was well done and much better then first!

7. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

Anchorman 2 was a great time no doubt about it! It made me laugh harder then I have in a long time! It's a silly stupid movie that you can't not laugh at. The funniest parts are the little things you see in the background that add some comic relief!

6. Saving Mr. Banks

Saving Mr. Banks was a very original story. This is probably the first time I've seen a movie based on someone getting the rights to make a movie! Very well done and the acting was absolutely amazing! Emma Thompson was a great P. L. Travers, and Tom Hanks pulled off a great Walt Disney.

5. Gravity

Gravity had spectacular visuals, camera angles and filming tactics! The movie itself took place mostly in space and only one scene was shot on earth ( so to speak ) Sandra Bullock was an amazing actress in this movie and I believe she is worthy of some wins! Also a very original movie!

4. Iron Man 3

For the next two I'm going to be somewhat fanboy... Iron Man 3 was a great way to wrap up the 'Iron Man' trilogy. Not as great as the first but not as disappointing as Iron Man 2. This was the first movie after 'The Avengers' and it is taking a toll on Tony. It was action packed, fun and exciting! Well done Shane Black!

3.Thor: The Dark World

The sequel to 'Thor' and 'The Avengers' we see Thor and he is very mature! He is preparing to be king an isn't a foolish child anymore. We do see old such as Jane and Loki with Erik Selvig. For Loki, he was the villain in 'The Avengers' and you can't not love him! The movie was fun and entertaining! Not the greatest Marvle movie but it wasn't a dissapointment!

2. Star Trek Into Darkness

I absolutely loved this movie!! I personally really enjoy the Star Trek series and this was a great sequel!! JJ Abrams does a great job with these movies!! Then there's Benedict Cumberpatch who made an amazing Khan! I just can't get over how much I enjoyed this movie!!

1. The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug

Yes this is my all time favourite movie of 2013! I am an enormous fan of The Lord of the Rings and they are my favourite movies so there's no way I couldn't love this movie! The first was a bit of a disappointment but this movie was just amazing!! The best thing was Smaug also played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Smaug was the best dragon in movie history!! This is very worthy of my #1 movie of 2013!!
